What is one Core Competency your state Flex Program is working on developing through Flex activities?

Core Competency: Improving Financial Sustainability

The Rural Health Manager provides each Critical Access Hospital (CAHs) with an annual Financial Indicator Over Time report utilizing Flex Monitoring Team data. Review of each CAHs (Critical Access Hospitals) financial indicators identifies 3 financial indicators that the majority of the CAHs were not trending in a favorable direction. Trainings are provided to address ways to improve these 3 financial indicators.

During this past Flex grant year, CAHs have participated in financial trainings that included best practices in Cost Reporting, Revenue Cycle management A-Z and Coding Transitional Care Management. Cost Report analysis was also provided to review revenue and expense matching, overhead allocation accuracy and strategy, opportunities to improve Medicare reimbursement and identify potential reimbursement risks. Four of the CAHs selected to participate in this.

What is one activity your state is funding through SHIP?

The Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) participated in 6 monthly learning collaborative meetings, which covered topics in the following areas: organizational leadership; data collection, analysis and utilization; measuring and monitoring health statuses; conducting a root cause analysis; and building community partnerships: strategies and tools for success.
